Pala frowned, "I'm sure she'll impress, it just hasn't been her time yet," she eyed him for a moment before the next words seemed to tumble out, "It must be hard for you too! ...Ah that is, I have a little sister also... and as the older sibling it must be hard to watch her go through that..." She frowned again, very obviously mentally chastising herself.
"I haven't seen a white dragon before... but they're supposed to be rare right? So I guess that makes sense. I'd be happy to see it hatch at all, and I'm sure Midnael wouldn't care if it was a tiny green or blue... as long as it hatched."
"I..." she stopped, opting to think about her words this time, "I... don't really. It's a good learning experience... I just... feel greedy somewhat. Here I am having made Journeyman rank which I've been working for it seems like forever now, and I get to pursue a dream that nearly every man, woman, and child on Pern have dreamt of at some point or another... To even be able to stand on the sands is a huge honor. Most don't ever get the chance to even see a Hatching, much less stand for one."

Alexander smiled slightly. He understood everything she said. “It’s very hard, but Zyika and I are not as close as we once were.” He said with a pause before looking at his fire lizard. “Alyzin and her do not get along anymore.” Shaking his head slightly he couldn’t quite understand why his sister and Alyzin always argued. It was funny to see a winged creature chirping angrily and his sister yelling at each other.
“As far as I can remember, there has not been a white dragon here.” He said softly. He sighed; it would be wonderful to see a white dragon before he passed on. If a white was to hatch then that must be a good sign right?
He smiled again as he heard how much of an honor it was to stand in the hatching sands. This would be his first time standing too. He had watched all of the other hatchings that his sister had stood in, unsure of why his sister got to stand and he didn’t but this turn had been different. Perhaps they were just that desperate for candidates to pick him. He slightly doubted himself but at the same time he knew he would be able to impress. He impressed a fire lizard how much different is a dragon?

She smiled weakly, "I haven't seen my sister in turns, and I fear I'll see my family even less now that I'm assigned here. Sometimes I wonder if my parents realized that sending me away would lead to me being this far away... I don't think they'll be able to make it to the hatching either, we're cotholders so we don't really have the means or sway to get transportation."
"Not even visiting from another Weyr..? Interesting..." she would have thought they had seen at least one, but they were still rare, even though they actually hatched now, "I don't know if it's a good sign necessarily, but if a white is strong enough to hatch maybe it means the rest are stronger too."
She took the herb packets that she had removed from the boxes and looked inside each, double checking that they were in fact the herb that was labeled on the outside. She really didn't want a mix-up.

He shook his head, “If you impress and after Weyrling training you’ll be able to see them.” He felt sad for a second, he couldn’t even imagine what it would be like if his mother wouldn’t be watching. “Think of it this way, this place is part of your family now. You won’t be alone.”
He nodded with her in agreement. Alyzin let out a yawn and looked at the two in wonderment. Watching her check and double check herbs he couldn’t help but to think she was a bit ocd. “What are these herbs used for?” He asked as he reached up and scratched Alyzin.
“It’s the funniest thing watching a firelizard argue with a person.” He said slightly beginning to ramble since there really was nothing else to do. “Alyzin thought he would try and scare my sister, and of course my sister had a pot in her hand. When Alyzin tried scaring her, Zyika ended up throwing the pot at him.” He laughed slightly as he remembered that day. “Today my sister tried to make peace but instead Alyzin bit her hand.” That was what started the whole looking for Alyzin process. Alexander had gotten mad, and Alyzin went and flew away.

She smiled at his words, "Yeah I guess it is," Her smile abruptly turned to a frown, no that was bad, no making family out of potential future patients. Just where had that gotten her in the past? And he... he would become a dragonrider, she was sure of it. So this boy would almost certainly become a patient once thread fell...
"Ah well these ones in particular will be used in packets that can be used as medicine when added to food or steeped in tea. Think of them as future sick packs," she set them aside for now, placing the main box up on a shelf with the extras, "I usually come in early to make them and prep the infirmary. I rather like the quiet of the Weyr before it wakes up, makes for very focused work. I'll work on these particular packets in the morning."
"Oh wow... Sounds like they're at a bit of a stalemate in their relationship I guess... The differences between one firelizard and the next are astounding. Or even between them and the ones they impress to."

He couldn’t understand why she smiled then frowned. Had he said something wrong? Perhaps he did? He tilted his head with a confused look on his face. He hadn’t meant to make her frown. “You should smile more. You’re prettier when you smile.” He said softly. Then watched her explain the herbs a little to him. He never really understood the medicinces, and was impressed that many people actually studied this sort of stuff. He was sure he would get lost within a day.
He smirked, “Ya it is. But Zyika can be a little hard to handle, well after you get her to start talking.” He shook his head lightly. “She’s shy very shy at first. Well more of shy most of the time. But once she gets comfortable she’s very argumentative.” Alyzin hissed slightly at Zyika’s name. Alex shook his head, he would never understand his fire lizard’s relationship with his sister. But oh well there was nothing he could do.

She couldn't help smiling at his words, any more than she could hide the blush, "My sister is the pretty one. I know I'm not ugly or anything, but I wouldn't call me pretty either. In fact I'm usually a wreck, my hair being the worst of it..." she reached up to push back a lock that had escaped the scarf, "It tangles constantly if I don't pull it back."
Her sister had beautiful hair that was dark and thick and easy to manage. Pala often found herself wondering if they even had the same parents, even though she knew that they did. Other than the hair, and the darkness of her eyes Laura looked a lot like Pala did, with a smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose.
"So she's harder to handle after you get to know her?" Pala laughed, "Oh that must be fun for you then! If there's one thing I know it's that you can't force someone to get along with someone else. If they're meant to get along they will do so in their own time. Of course you could wind up very unlucky and she will end up impressing a firelizard that isn't too fond of you." She smiled, obviously teasing.

"Oh I know she will! I'm more worried she'll impress a dragon that doesn't like me." He laughed with a shake of his head. "With my luck the dragon will be after me a lot for all the times Alyzin and her got into it." Alyzin gave out a small little snort as if saying he would never let a dragon hurt Alexander which made Alex smile slightly.
"And you are pretty. No doubt about it." He added as his attention turned to Alyzin once more to scratch the fire lizard's eye lid. Alex was still smiling at the thought of his sister impressing some dragon that does not like him. He wouldn't know what to do except to keep bribing the dragon with food. Closing his eyes he could almost see it himself, him standing there keeping a herdbeast between him and Zyika's dragon. Opening his eyes he sighed, "The hatching will be soon. That I know." He added out of no where.

Pala leaned back against the shelves behind her, amazingly for someone so clumsy when it came to hurting herself she didn't seem to even touch anything on the shelves and nothing came tumbling down, "Weren't you the one who told me dragons don't eat people? Now here you are talking about one being after you?" She laughed, "Half the girls at my hold would shriek if they heard you even mention such a thing... You'd think farm girls would be made of tougher stuff," she rolled her eyes and looked over at the herb pouches on the counter.
"Thread will fall soon and I just hope we'll be ready," I hope I'll be ready..., "And I can't help but worry... I like everyone here, I'm getting to know them. At the Healercraft Hall they were mostly strangers but it still..." she took a deep breath, "I can't imagine anyone here getting hurt... or worse..." She really shouldn't be saying this, what had the Masters always told her, that Healers must be the strength when the rest of Pern had none. That was why a Healer shouldn't get attached to every patient. Certainly kindness and compassion were appreciated but you couldn't do your job while mourning every death in a plague or so they told her.
"Just... when you impress, don't take any stupid risks okay? Don't let your sister take them either."

Alexander smiled at what she said. "Well dragons don't but with my luck my sister will impress one that will." He laughed, "Most girls don't have the courage to even stand, but the ones that do are always searched. Which means you will do just fine. Besides with everything Zyika and Alyzin have been through I'm sure Zyika would be thinking pay back time." He added jokingly knowing his sister would never do that to him.
"There will be no injuries if I can help it. I will impress a mightly dragon and be able to last a full thread fall...hopefully." He added the last part with a slight sigh. And here he was talking about him impressing when he wasn't even sure if he will. "And you're forgetting yourself. You will impress as well." He said confidently. He could see her ride just about any color and that he meant.

She smiled, weakly, "I really wish people would stop telling me that. If it happens it happens, but I have something that makes me happy here... and I don't want to be discontent if a Healer is all I ever amount to. It's far more than most are able to become and I am proud of that."
She tilted her chin up a bit, "Now you on the other hand, I'm not saying that I think you will impress to be nice, or because you were nice to me. Based on what I've been told you seem to have traits that a dragon looks for, and you know what you want. It's simply my own scientific evaluation of the matter based on a compilation of research gathered from everyone I've spoken to," Well that certainly made her sound cold and heartless... she sighed, "I do like you though, which is why I don't want you to get hurt."
