Name: D’ak
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Wingrider
Family: Father – D’lan (deceased bluerider), Mother – Nareka (lower caverns worker), various younger halfsibs by his mother including a greenrider sister, a bluerider brother, and a greenrider brother
Dragon: Black Rayth
Pets: Do they have any firelizards or other animals? List them here. (Even if you're not starting out with any, you might want to leave this here to add to later if you Impress firelizards later on.)
Appearance: Not particularly tall, D’ak’s leanly muscular build and poised, forceful way of holding himself make him more imposing than he would be otherwise. His posture is always, always correct, militaristically correct even. Dark haired, dark skinned, and dark eyed, he would seem a foreboding figure even if he didn’t tend to wear darker colors. His eyes appear nearly black, with none of the warmth displayed by lighter shades of brown. His black hair is close-cropped out of practicality, and surprisingly soft, much to the amusement of the women in his life. He is naturally dark-skinned, being descended from Igen desert-dwellers, and therefore doesn’t suffer from the issues that many fairer-skinned dragonriders do from a life spent in the sun.
Basic Personality: D’ak is strongly introverted, and rarely seeks out social interactions other than that of his dragon. Even in the company of others he is quiet, cold and watchful. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, he rarely lacks for a bed partner when he wants one – though the relationship never goes further than that.
Strengths (at least 5, preferably more, do not simply list them, but add a little description/example to go along with it)
Faults (at least 5, preferably more, do not simply list them, but add a little description/example to go along with it)
History: D’ak began life in Igen Weyr as Danak, the result of a bluerider’s fling with a lower caverns worker. It’s possible that he has older half-siblings by his father, but since bluerider D’lan was killed in an accident not long after Danak’s birth he never got the opportunity to ask him, and his mother never knew. Like most of the Weyr’s children, he spent most of his time in the crèche while his mother worked in the kitchens. He was his mother’s first child, but over the years he gained several half-siblings. He was always the quiet, introverted boy out of the lot, but was the one who took charge of the children when they got too rowdy, even the older ones. The crèche workers were sorry to see him go when he became a candidate.
Although he didn’t Impress that first time, or the time after that, Danak was quietly confident in his ability to be a dragonrider. After all, his father had been a bluerider, and his mother’s family had all been dragonriders. Over the years, two of his younger half-brothers Impressed, one to green and one blue, and an even younger half-sister Impressed green, but Danak was still left waiting on the sands each time. By the time he was eighteen, his confidence had eroded into worry, and a vague self-doubt. And that’s when it got worse.
There was a girl. She was beautiful, and smart, and funny, and Danak fell head-over-heels in love with her. He’d never felt so strongly for anyone before, and for a while it seemed like she reciprocated his feelings. They’d been together exclusively since they were sixteen. Finally, when Danak was eighteen, the girl Impressed to a gold hatchling. After the hatchling, despite her being surrounded by other people, Danak approached her to congratulate her, but the girl turned on him. In front of everyone, she proceeded to tear apart everything about him, informing him in no uncertain terms that he was worthless. The son of an unimportant bluerider, sibling to unimportant blue and greenriders, even if he did ever manage to Impress he’d never be any more important than they were, never better than a shy, useless wingrider, never good enough for her. A relationship of two years, destroyed in an instant because the girl Impressed to gold and Danak was left standing yet again.
Danak was betrayed, broken, and humiliated. He’d loved her more than anything. For a while he considered killing himself. That passed, replaced by a burning, driving need to prove that what she’d said was wrong. Still, every little thing he saw reminded him of the time they’d spent together. Just being in the same Weyr was a torment. Luckily, word was being spread of a new Weyr being formed, and a clutch that was laid that would need candidates. Danak, the candidate that could not Impress, was transferred.
He stood at that first clutch with all that self-doubt tucked away deep inside. The last egg to hatch revealed a big, lean Black. But there was something wrong – he was staggering around awkwardly even for a hatchling. One foreleg was shorter than the other, and the foot was crooked, the hatchling was unable to open his claws enough to put his weight on it properly. He lost his balance and fell against a shard of shell. His wail of pain as the shard gashed his muzzle galvanized many of the boy candidates to step forward to help him, but it was Danak who heard the deep, rumbling voice in his head. Polite even injured, Rayth begged his pardon for causing such a disruption and requested his assistance. He’d finally Impressed, and it didn’t matter to him that Rayth wasn’t perfectly formed – he was perfect to D’ak.

Strengths (at least 5, preferably more, do not simply list them, but add a little description/example to go along with it)
- Despite all his faults, D’ak has good intentions. He doesn’t want leadership for himself, instead because he wants to provide for people.
- In his own distant way, he really is kind. He never goes out of his way to be cruel to anyone, and if he saw someone else doing so he would be the first to step forward and… correct them, so to speak.
- D’ak doesn’t hold a grudge, not for very long. To him, it’s a waste of time and energy that could be spent elsewhere. People may not realize that they’re forgiven, given how hard he can be to read, but chances are he’d forgiven them right away.
- Although not the person most would chose outright to confide in, D’ak is in fact an attentive and nonjudgmental listener. He rarely ventures his opinion on personal matters unless asked, and even then is careful to chose his words carefully and diplomatically, understanding as he does how vulnerable confiding in someone leaves you.
- Discrete – It would probably come to no surprise to anyone to find that D’ak is very, very good at keeping secrets. He’s not going to brag around the Weyr that he slept with so-and-so last night, or that he saw a married man kissing someone he shouldn’t have been, and he’s not going to betray a trust by telling secrets others have confided in him.
Faults (at least 5, preferably more, do not simply list them, but add a little description/example to go along with it)
- D’ak has… authority issues. He dislikes taking orders even when he agrees with them. If he doesn’t, he’s liable to argue about it, or simply disregard them all together.
- Ambitious – that’s putting it mildly. Only Rayth is more important to D’ak than achieving his goals. Long-term, he covets the Weyrleadership. Short-term, any leadership position will do.
- He refuses to maintain close relationships. To him, long-term romances and close friendships are just an unnecessary distraction and put him at risk of being hurt again.
- D’ak comes across as cold to people, as emotionless. He’s not, but he’s so self-contained that people might not see the signs unless they knew what to look for.
- D’ak’s rigid self-control hides deepseated feelings of inadequacy, of vulnerability. Selfdoubt and, worse, selfloathing niggle at him constantly, always driving him relentlessly to prove himself, colouring every decision he makes.
