Name: Talaria
Age: 27 Turns
Gender: female
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Rank: Senior Weyrwoman/Dragonhealer
Family: Talan – Father, Rialle - Mother
Dragon: Gold Orlaith
Pets: none
Appearance: Talaria is quite pretty. She has long, slightly curled, raven black hair and striking light blue-green eyes. Her skin is slightly dusky and dark freckles appear here and there. She has an athletic build with soft, feminine features. She stands at five foot seven and moves with the lithe and purposeful grace of a hunting wild feline. She has a strong presence that does not often go unnoticed.
Basic Personality: Talaria is very much an ‘Alpha’ female and has an incredibly hard time taking orders from anyone. She is focused on one thing and one thing only, being the best Weyrwoman for her Weyr and showing all those skeptics that she was not too young to be sent to start the new Weyr on the Western Continent. She is always seeking to better herself and gain as much knowledge as she possibly can to better lead Western. She makes sure to take a trip between after every Flight, every intimate encounter otherwise had, because pregnancy would only be a distraction that she does not have time for. Unlike her dragon, she does not care if she hurts others’ feelings, she speaks her mind regardless of how others might react to it. Orlaith is often left scolding her for being rude and sometimes apologizes for her behavior.
Strengths
- Loyal – If you can handle her rather overwhelming personality and earn her friendship, she is extremely loyal and protective. If you hurt her friends, she takes it as a personal insult and you can be sure she will get back at you for it.
- Ambitious – Talaria is ambitious in that she wishes to be the best that she can be. Just being a Goldrider is fine and dandy, but she wants to be the best Goldrider, the best Weyrwoman. She is always ready to learn new things in order to better herself and is always working for self-improvement.
- Focused – When Talaria is working, whether it be dragonhealing or simply keeping up records, she is entirely focused on the task and will do anything to see it through to the end.
- Independent – Talaria is opinionated and not afraid to share those opinions. She is extremely self-confident and is not afraid to stand alone against the whole of Pern if they disagreed with her on something.
- For The Good Of All – Surprisingly enough, Talaria does her best not just for herself, but for her Weyr and for the Western Continent and for Pern as a whole. She may be one of the most important people on Pern, but that comes with responsibility which she does not take lightly. With everything she does she takes into account how it will affect her Weyr and the rest of Pern before she makes a decision.
Faults
- Arrogant – Talaria has quite the ego that only received a huge boost from Impressing to Orlaith and further from being chosen to lead the new Weyr. She is obviously one of the most important people on Pern, certainly the most important on the Western Continent, and should be treated as such.
- Headstrong – Once Talaria has made up her mind it is almost impossible to get her to change it, and if something goes wrong because of it, it is obviously because someone else did not do something right not because she made the wrong decision.
- Problems With Authority – Talaria has always been disobedient, she has major problems with taking orders and will most often blatantly ignore them or do the complete opposite rather than follow them. Her superiors back at Benden found that asking her (almost as if she would be doing them a favor by complying with the request) was a pretty sure way to make sure she actually did what they wanted her to do, but ordering her outright will always be met with opposition. This is something G’brel never understood and was part of the reason they fought so much when he was Weyrleader.
- Grudge Holder – Talaria does not forgive and forget easily. Earning her trust and friendship is not easily done and if you betray her after she’s finally decided to trust you there is little chance she will ever trust you again. She may forgive, if you work really hard for her forgiveness, but she will NEVER forget, and one second chance is all she will ever give, if you’re even lucky enough to get that from her.
- Know It All – because she is always striving for self-improvement and she spends every spare moment researching, studying, reading, learning, she can be quite the know-it-all. She often acts as if she knows everything and can be quite unbearable about it.
History: Born and raised in Benden Hold, her father and mother were both Healers and she was to follow in their footsteps and was quite happy at the prospect. However, only one Turn after she had been formally apprenticed, she was Searched. Now, the prospect of becoming a dragonrider was something to truly be happy about. And there was a Gold egg on the Sands! She agreed to Candidacy and only a month later the eggs hatched. She stood as other girls Impressed Greens, Burgundies, and even a Blue. During the month she was at Benden Weyr before the hatching she had snuck plenty of time with the Gold egg, telling it how beautiful it was and that it would surely be the finest of Golds ever to be clutched. And when it hatched, the pale Gold hatchling looked right at her.
Am I truly so glorious, do you really think? I do not feel glorious, my Talaria, I feel… hungry. Please feed your Orlaith now if you would?
She was 13 Turns when she Impressed Orlaith and many were surprised that someone so young would Impress a Gold at her first Standing. She was Benden’s fourth Goldrider when most of the other Weyrs only had 2, maybe 3, during the Interval. Over the next two Turns as Orlaith matured, she was taught in the ways of Goldriders and Weyrwomen.
Orlaith was caught by a young Bronze on her first Flight and the young man who rode him became rather infatuated with Talaria. He tried to spend time with her whenever he could but she refused every advance he made. For nearly two Turns he dogged her every step until the decision was made that the Western Continent would be settled. She demanded to be sent and also that her annoying follower be forbidden from going. There was much debate about sending someone as young as Talaria to act as Weyrwoman to a Weyr that had yet to be established, but those of Benden actually pushed for it, reasoning that they had the most Goldriders of all the Weyrs and a young Gold with many clutching Turns ahead of her was just what a new Weyr would need and also Orlaith was due to rise soon and a Weyrleader would be able to be chosen all that much sooner. They knew Talaria would be all but insufferable if she was kept from going, and their own reasoning did make sense. Reluctantly it was agreed and soon Talaria was on her way to the Western Continent with a group of riders, and that annoying Bronzerider was left behind.
There were only two Bronzeriders that went to Western right away, and three Blackriders. When Orlaith rose all five chased, but Talaria, dreading it, thought she knew already who her Gold would choose. Greth, the much older Bronze, dragon of that insufferable G’brel. Orlaith never ceased to tell her how he complimented her each time he saw her, how nice and polite he was. Sure enough it was Greth to catch her, Orlaith had clearly scorned the other four contenders almost as soon as the Flight had begun. He claimed her in subsequent Flights as well, no other Bronzes or Blacks presenting themselves as any sort of competition for him.
And that sharding G’brel remained Weyrleader for nearly ten Turns. He treated her like a child that he was assigned to watch over and if he ever ‘agreed’ with her about anything it was more like he was humoring her, doing her a favor, than anything. She may have only been 17 Turns when she came to Western, but she was no child. She got it into her mind that she had to find a way to oust the man from his position. Orlaith seemed rather horrified by the idea, after all she liked Greth. Talaria assured her she would get a better Bronze for her, though Orlaith was rather skeptical since the only other contenders for her mate so far were nothing compared to her Greth.
G’brel, however, was quite determined to keep his position, and denied any transfer requests from Bronzeriders, and most Blackriders as well. Talaria tried to reason with the man that Thread was coming and they needed more dragons that could last full Threadfall, but he wouldn’t hear of it, too at ease from his long Threadfree lifetime to worry about it too much. Finally she managed to approve a Bronzerider transfer without his knowledge: A’dion and Zevranth. The look upon G’brel’s face when the Bronzerider arrived was worth the argument that later ensued. The man was scared, and rightly so, for Orlaith seemed to be rather taken with the new, younger Bronze. He apparently doted on her just as much, if not more, than Greth. And she would rise again soon, very soon.
Not a sevenday after A’dion’s arrival Orlaith rose. Talaria worried that it had not given the new Bronze enough time to woo her and she had almost been right. Orlaith nearly allowed herself to be caught by Greth again and only her rider’s desperate mental screech of NO had her twisting away before the older Bronze could claim her, right toward Zevranth. And when the Gold felt the rush of relief from her rider, she let herself be caught by the new Bronze and made a new Weyrleader for Western. Since the Flight Talaria has gotten to know more of A’dion and finds him at once annoying and frustrating, and on occasion, perhaps, a little bit charming, though she’d never let him know that.
