D'ak.
In his weyr, D'ak suppressed a yawn as he glanced over to the black peering in from the sunny ledge. It was the middle of the day, so the young weyrling he shared his weyr with was off somewhere, probably lessons. It was just him and his very smug dragon.
I am not smug, Rayth objected, offended by the very idea. And indeed, he would have considered it the height of rudeness to gloat after having won Iroth's flight rather than Sabath. Still, he had been unusually bouncy and excited since then. That's beside the point. D'ak, I'm hungry.
D'ak yawned, out loud this time. "What do you need me for? It isn't like I need to cut meat up for you anymore."
Rayth snorted disapprovingly. You have been holed up in here all day, D'ak, and don't think I don't know why. It's time you got out and got some fresh air, some sun in your old bones. It serves you right too, for sleeping around. His rider had indeed spent the day hiding in his weyr, supposedly reading though he had barely made it through a chapter.
"I don't 'sleep around'," he growled back at the dragon. "How was I to know that she wanted a 'real relationship' and not just a good night? Jays, Rayth, this is a Weyr, not a Hold. One night does not a marriage make." He winced mentally. The scene that had ensued last night when he'd made that clear had certainly added to his cold-hearted reputation, that was for sure. "And who are you to talk? You chase every tail in this weyr."
Whatever you say, Rayth sniffed. Regardless, you ARE coming with me, if I have to drag you out by your shirt collar. Tinsith's might be there.
D'ak leveled a suspicious stare at Rayth. "And why would that matter to me?"
Apparently it doesn't. She's just a very pretty young dragon. I do so hope the weyrlings are out today, he added wistfully. I haven't gotten to see much of this group.
"All right, all right." D'ak waved away the dragon's pitiful gaze. "Fine, I'll go with you. Just don't get all sappy about the babies the whole time, please." He tucked the book into his belt pouch, and headed out to the ledge to vault onto Rayth's back. The black glided down and around to the herdbeast pens, landing outside the pen to allow D'ak to slide off before he pounced over the fence right onto a herdbeast bull with a minimum of fuss. D'ak crossed his arms, back straight, and stood to watch Rayth eat for a moment.
