A dream to stand (open)

Raela had come to the stands and sat down to look down on the empty hatching sands with a sigh. She would love to stand for a dragon yet had not given the chance and sighed as her brown firelizard Milrek came up to her shoulder. The young woman sighed then petted him pulling out a few treats and feeding him as the eyes wandered to the empty sands. While she had watched others impress on numberous occassions and even wanted to just have a che. Her own brother had a dragon a blue one and sighed not caring what color that it turned out to be.

She tucked a piece of brown hair behind her ear and straightened out her skirt. The young woman was always cooking in the lower caverns and envied the young women who had been chosen. Raela sighed maybe her brother wouldn't ignore her as much if she became a dragonrider and would matter to him. He was always with the candidates and never had time for her always just treated her like everyone else. While she knew that the grey dragon had risen and hoped that maybe she might get a chance.

Verra found herself wandering along the stands in the Hatching area. Her gaze panned across the sands, reminding her of her own experiance not all that long ago. Watching all those candidates become weyrlings, being passed over time and time again by dragons bent on finding Theirs, standing sad and alone afterwards. Her eyes threatened to tear up at the thought of going through that again; she fought them back. She would Impress! If not...well, it'd better happen! At last, a feeling of determination returned to her.

A blast of warm air across her face signaled the appearance of her brown, Sonny. "Well, hello there, laddie. What're ye here for?" She looked around briefly, spotting another brown 'lizard. And a girl. Verra stepped back into the shadows, her heartbeat quickening. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping the other girl hadn't noticed her. But...too late; she opened her eyes to see Sonny gliding over to meet the other firelizard. Her brown circled the other, giving an inquiring chirp. Verra willed her heart to slow down as she slowly stepped into view again. "Er, hello. I...er...my...my firelizard...he seems ta want ta talk ta yers. I...I'm Verra," she introduced herself hesitantly.

She saw another brown fire lizard circle then come to land near hears and watched as Milrek ended up chirping back. Raela smiled at him for a moment then noticed another woman coming closer and said, "I love brown fire lizards their the middle man," as the chirping was continued. "I'm Raela," said Raela as she held out a hand to her to shake it and looked over at the other woman. The young woman had not wanted to run into anyone else yet here she was talking to another woman and smiled a little.e "I haven't meet any other women with brown fire lizards or fire lizards in general this is rare," said Raela. The woman gazed back down to the empty sands and sighed.

Raela had been around other women her whole life yet only meet a few others with fire lizards sort of like dragon riders they we're short in supply. She had always appreciated the fact that a brown fire lizard had been given to her because a queen would not have fit her. The young woman had to smile it was nice to run into other people and then smiled a little. "Brown fire lizards are a friendly bunch," said Raela as she smiled at them all.

Verra stared at the offered hand for a moment before extending her own hand to shake. She really wasn't comfortable talking to another woman, but Sonny seemed to be quite content to talk all day. "Aye," she replied to Raela's comment, "they...browns, I mean...they're wonderful. Me Sonny...he's...he likes ta tease people. Does the strangest things. Lands on people's heads an' the like." Shards, she was beginning to babble. "I'm sorry I jest...I wasn't expecting ta...ta meet anyone here. I'm a wee bit...er...shy 'round...people I don't know..." This situation just kept getting more awkward. She didn't want the other woman to hate her, but she couldn't avoid the fact that this pretty, lonely-looking lass was testing her self-control by being so friendly. No one had been this openly friendly to her since she'd revealed her preferences back at the Hold.

She followed the other woman's gaze to the sands. She could imagine Raela's train of thought; she echoed it. "Before long, there'll be a new Clutch there." She paused as a new thought struck her. "Are...are ye a Candidate? What...what dragon do ye...what dragon are ye hopin' for? I...well, I don't really care what type o' dragon I get...s'long as I get one, ye know?" She didn't add that blue was added to that list of colors.

Verra returned her eyes to the two 'lizards. Sonny seemed to be inviting the other to play, 'tagging' the brown's nose with his tail before looping around Verra and flying farther into the stands. "Aye. I figure they're less...," her face reddened and she turned slightly to the side, hoping Raela couldn't see it, "hormonal... than bronzes, blacks, and golds. So they...er...aren't as... violent..." She was both relieved and saddened that she hadn't seen any green or grey flits yet; Sonny was bound to take place in any flights by either.

"Nice, to meet you," said Raela as she smiled at her then took the hand back listening to her questions. She was a little hard to understand and sighed then said, "No, I haven't been found worthy,". Raela sighed looking at her then said, "Not even my brother has found me worthy to stand," another sore subject. "I would love just about any color just a chance to ride you know," said Raela as she motioned for the girl to have a seat. The young woman looked at the brown fire lizards as the other one seemed to want to play and her Milrek with a playful nature chirped then went after to chase the other fire lizard. He was always starting those type of games and she smiled at them relived that he was having fun.

She said, "I don't know about that yet at least there are still capable of flying after queens," then looked at her. "Did your brown fly after a queen yet mine has yet to catch anything other then a green," said Raela a little ashamed that her fire lizard couldn't catch anything else. The brown was always interested in the queens yet it didn't happen and sighed looking around. "What color do you want," asked Raela with a cheerful smile a little relived to actually be talking to someone other then other lower caverns maidens?

When Verra heard about Raela's brother, she immediately felt bad for her. "I...I'm sorry. I'm sure ye'll get Searched soon enough, though. I mean, with a Clutch on the way, they'll need plenty o' Candidates ta pick from, aye?" She wasn't very good at cheering people up, and hoped that her efforts weren't just making things worse.

Sonny chirped happily at the other 'lizard, glad that he wanted to play. The other was a brown, but there were no mates around, so they could be friends. Sonny flipped around, diving through the seats before ascending again in a corkscrew. He was absolutely delighted to have found a friend to fly with.

Her blush deepened at Raela's first question. "Ah, well...er...no...not really... He...ah...took place in a queen flight...but...he...er...didn't catch her. Did... catch a green before, though..." She was practically scarlet now. That had been her first mating flight. The green had belonged to one of her friends, who had her man standing nearby to step in once the flight had reached its climax. But she didn't have anyone. She was able to ignore the mating-flight lust, and everyone was understanding about it, but it didn't change the fact that she hadn't actually participated in any mating flights.

She almost missed the girl's other question. "Well..." She decided to tell her. This was a Weyr; it was accepted here. "I...I was actually hoping fer...fer a Blue or a Burgundy." There, she'd said it.

Freya smiled when the other girl was talking about the fire lizard only catching a green and smiled at her. "Well I personally don't care what he catches just for him to be happy," said Freya as her little one kept going after the other brown fire lizard. "A blue or a burgundy," said Freya whispering because she knew what the girl meant about those colors. "Well, there is nothing wrong with that and I know that I'll never impress brown because they only go to guys it's most likely a green which is okay with me," said Freya with a smile then looked at her. "Your not from around these parts where do you come from," asked Freya pleased to have someone new to talk to?

Her fire lizard Milrek went to hide behind her and got the few treats out of a side pocket then took another treat for his new friend. Milrek flew up to the other brown fire lizard and put on the ground pushing it forward to him. Freya smiled Milrek was always taking care of other fire lizards and for a brown had a very caring nature. The little brown fire lizard soon was busy with his friend and Freya turned her full attention back to her friend.

Verra's heart swelled. 'There is nothing wrong with that.' So her brother really was right; she could be herself here. The feeling only diminished slightly when she heard the other girl's choice of color. Well, so what? There were bound to be others...right?

To the girl's question, she replied, "Aye, I come from Ruatha. In fact, if I didn't have so many elder siblings, Father probably wouldn'a let me come here, even if the Searchrider said I could. He can be such a stubborn git sometimes." She could hardly believe how calm she felt, now that she knew that she didn't have to hide her true self anymore.

Sonny eyed the treat before snatching it up. Yummy! His eyes glowed with gratitude for his new friend. He popped between briefly, reappearing with one of his shinies, a shard from a broken mirror that he'd managed to snare before it was discarded. He set it down for the other lizard as a thank-you for the treat.

Raela smiled at her for a moment then watches as the other fire lizard disappeared then reappeared with a bit of mirror. Milrek chirped with happiness as the bit of mirror was put in front of him and then took it in his mouth then disappeared. "His no doubt taking it to one of his hiding places," said Raela not knowing how many hiding places her little brown fire lizard had. The candidate said, "Your little one is sweet," then the brown fire lizard reappeared. He went over chirping away with the other one no doubt having their own little conversation.

"I have two older brothers myself not close to them at all," said Raela as she didn't have a relationship with them at all. She was close to her parents yet that is strained at times and sighed then just hoped that the dragon would start to clutch soon. "So do you guys have any whers around here haven't seen any," asked Raela as she looked at? The candidate hadn't seen any and wanted to see a few just out of curiosity they didn't have any back at her old weyr.

Verra watched the antics with amusement. It really was kind for Sonny to give the other lizard one of his prized 'shinies.' "Aye. It's his way o' sayin' thankee," she said, grinning. She noticed that she was slipping farther into her accent as time passed. Sonny trilled back at the firelizard, chatting amicably about, well, pretty much everything.

She shrugged simply. She'd been much too worried about everything associated with being a Candidate that she hadn't noticed if there were whers or not. And frankly, it didn't concern her, so it wasn't likely she would find out unless she really looked into it - not likely, given her amount of 'free time.' "I hadn'a really noticed meself. There's not much time for me to do much of anything except work."
