Dragons can make a wide variety of sounds, each with its own meaning:
Bellow - Alarm, irritation or attention call. Bugle - Joy, triumph, happiness, challenge (rising/chasing) or greeting. Croon - Pleasure, reassurance or apology. Growl - Warning, anger. Humming - A sound made by all the dragons of a weyr when eggs are hatching/about to hatch. Keen - Mournful sound signifying death. Also often made in chorus, to mourn the death of another dragon. Moan - Sound of distress or anxiety. Roar - Anger, confusion or pain. Rumble - Amusement, happiness. Like laughing. Trill - Curiosity, pleasure, enjoyment or satisfaction. Wail - Sadness or worry. Warble - Self satisfaction or gratitude.
Dragons have faceted eyes with three eyelids: a thin, clear inner membrane, a thicker membrane on top of that, and the thickest membrane that is the same color as the dragon’s hide on top of that. Their eye color changes with mood:
Blue/Green – happiness/contentment Yellow – fear, worry, stress Orange – annoyance, irritation, suspicion Red - hunger, anger, or mating lust (during the chase) Lavender/purple – mating lust (after catching/being caught) White - danger Grey – illness
Dragons communicate telepathically and generally only with their rider (and other dragons). They are capable of communicating with others but it usually doesn’t happen very often, save for the odd talkative/friendly dragon here and there who doesn’t much mind who they speak with. Here at Western dragons have telekinesis but they do not consciously use it or even know about it, in that they can lift whatever they think they can lift, but they can’t move objects with their mind or anything from across a room or what have you.
Dragons have the ability to teleport, go almost instantly from one end of the world to another, by going between. Between is a place of complete and utter nothingness, sensation does not even exist. A dragon needs coordinates, a clear vision of where they are going, from their rider in order to emerge from between, otherwise they will disappear inside the nothingness forever, taking any passengers with them.
Clutching dragons, after mating, will be pregnant for at least three months before they actually take to the sands and lay their eggs. From there it will take approximately five weeks for the eggs to harden before they hatch.
In our AU, Lessa still brought the Weyrs 400 Turns forward in time and the feat is a well known one, though it has already started to lapse into myth and exaggeration (mostly with the higher ranks’ help) because timing it (teleporting between times) is even more dangerous than regular betweening and puts quite a lot of strain on the rider and the dragon alike. The higher ranks know of its existence but it is put off as myth to everyone else. Anyone caught timing it without permission from staff will have their character disappear between forever without their consent, and there will be only very rare occasions when permission WILL be granted. You must have a very, very good reason for it. As the site progresses, it may become part of the plot and may be allowed, but for now NO ONE will be timing it.
Dragons cannot remember anything that happened more than three days ago. If they wish to remember something further they must access their rider’s memories, and their rider will be aware of this. Dragons also have a hard time relating one action to another, so safety measures taken by their riders to prevent bad things happening doesn’t mean that the dragon won’t freak out about their rider’s safety unless their rider is sure to make the dragon understand what the safety measures mean.
All dragons (save Whites) must obey a direct order from a higher color, even against their rider’s wishes. No dragon will ever disobey a Gold and getting conflicting orders from two Golds can drive a dragon insane trying to obey both where it will go between and never return. A senior Gold, with the help of Bronzes, can also make another Gold obey her. Here’s a quick rundown of the color hierarchy: Golds – all dragons must obey Golds Bronzes – all dragons except Golds must obey Bronzes Greys – all dragons except Golds and Bronzes must obey Greys Blacks – Browns, Burgundies, Blues, and Greens must obey Blacks Browns – Blues and Greens must obey Browns Burgundies – Greens must obey Burgundies Blues are only slightly above Greens in that they do not have to obey Burgundies and Greens do, but Greens do not have to obey a direct order from a Blue. Whites cannot issue orders to be surely obeyed, nor do they have to obey orders from any of the other colors, even Golds
