Plot SynopsisIt is Turn 1 of the Fifth Pass, following hot on the heels of 450 Turns of threadfree skies during the Long Interval. The Weyrs are climbing out of the long destitution that the Interval brought, including Ista Weyr, where things are far from idyllic. A power-hungry junior goldrider has been poisoning the Weyrwoman in an effort to take the Weyr for herself; the Weyrleader is spineless and weak-willed, and none of the other bronzeriders are much better. At the Hatching, eight eggs were left unhatched, a sure sign of the failing of the queen. The nearby Ista Hold isn't doing much better with an aging Lord who has yet to designate an Heir from among his twin sons. To make matters worse, the poor threadfighting by the Weyr has cost many holders their homes and livelihoods, inundating Ista Hold with refugees. Things are bound come to a head sooner or later - and it starting to look like it might be sooner, with the Westerners getting more and more desperate.
