Name: M’kal (born Mirekal)
Age: 30 Turns
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Weyrsecond/Wingsecond
Family: Mi’ren – father, Kaline – mother, Kalara – older half-sister, Forin – older half-brother, R’nel – older half-sister, Mina – younger half-sister
Dragon: Black Sabath
Pets: Grey Cinder
Appearance: M’kal reaches exactly 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and a wide chest. He keeps his dark brown, nearly black hair cut short. His eyes match his hair with the same dark brown, almost black coloring.
Basic Personality: Overall M’kal is a pretty nice guy, laid-back and easy to get along with. He seems to have endless patience and is willing to befriend just about anyone.
Strengths
- Diplomatic – M’kal likes to keep the peace and make sure all parties are content when decisions are made. He is good at coming up with compromises everyone can agree with and isn’t afraid to take a loss himself if it means keeping the peace.
- Easy-going – It takes a lot to get M’kal riled, and even if you do manage to get him angry it isn’t likely that he’ll stay that way for long.
- Level-headed – He has a naturally calm and collected personality that is rarely shaken. He has a talent for staying calm and objective in tense situations and has been known to settle fights before they start.
- Confident – He is confident in his own abilities and not at all afraid to step between two people about to get in a fight.
- Friendly – M’kal enjoys making friends and being social with everyone he’s met.
Faults (at least 5, preferably more, do not simply list them, but add a little description/example to go along with it)
- Doormat – He has been known to let others walk all over him in order to keep the peace.
- Shy – He is not overly shy but though he’s friendly he’s not one to make the first move to become friends with anyone. Rather you’d need to approach him first, and then he would be fine, but he’s something of a wallflower if there’s no one around that he knows and no one is approaching him.
- Quiet – If he’s not mediating and keeping a bad situation from escalating he is very soft-spoken and doesn’t often make his opinion known unless asked directly, even when his ideas could save a lot of time and trouble.
- Nosy – He doesn’t do it to be rude, but when you’re his friend he likes to know what’s going on in your life, and don’t spare the details.
- Open Book – M’kal isn’t really a gossip, but he has a hard time keeping his mouth shut and will say something impulsively that perhaps he should have kept to himself. He’s a horrible secret keeper. He would never give away someone’s secret on purpose, but it might happen when he’s not thinking and its really better not to trust him with anything you don’t want getting around the Weyr. He’ll feel horrible after and apologize profusely, but that won’t change the fact that you’re secret’s out.
History: M’kal was born Mirekal at Benden Weyr to a lower caverns woman, Kaline, and a Brownrider Mi’ren, the result of his father’s dragon losing a mating flight and him looking elsewhere for ‘relief’. His mother was always quite willing to help losing riders after mating flights and had two children before him from the same situation. Like his brother and sister before him, Kaline gave him up to the crèche shortly after he was weaned. He hardly saw his mother as he was growing up, but he was his father’s first and only son and so Mi’ren actually took the time to visit him from time to time. Having a relationship with his father and being able to know his Brown set him up to want to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a dragonrider as well. It was a bit worrying when his older brother and sister by his mother were never even chosen to Stand, but he watched his older sister by his father Impress to a Burgundy dragon on her first Standing and only a few Turns later he was Searched himself.
He was left standing on the Sands for two Turns before Sabath finally hatched and chose him after his 16th Turn. His Black hatched from the same clutch as Gold Orlaith, and so he and Talaria were Weyrlings together. The two became friends, M’kal complimenting Talaria’s rather overwhelming personality rather well with his own much more laid-back one. Along with Orlaith, he helped to keep her from causing too many problems with her hotheadedness and kept her grounded when she would have blown things way out of proportion. He grew to have something of a crush on the rash young woman and still does to this day, though he would never tell her, quite sure they aren’t compatible in such a way. When he found that Talaria would be the Goldrider sent to start the new Weyr he requested to go with and permission was given. Sabath chased Orlaith in her first rising at the new Weyr but the Black dragon was too standoffish for Orlaith and the Gold didn’t let him near her during the flight, much to both of their disappointment.
M’kal is not overly ambitious, Weyrleader or Wingrider, he’s quite content with any position he’s given, but he did think that he and Talaria could have balanced each other’s leadership styles out and a very good Weyrleader/Weyrwoman relationship. As it was, he did his best to simply keep the peace between Talaria and G’brel. Surprisingly enough, this gained G’brel’s favor as the older man found that M’kal could deal with Talaria much better than he could, and often made her easier to deal with. He made M’kal Weyrsecond, probably the only decision he and Talaria both whole-heartedly agreed upon. When A’dion became Weyrleader he thought maybe the Bronzerider would choose someone else to be Weyrsecond, and honestly didn’t have an issue with it, but so far he’s maintained his position.
